Monument to 1956 Planned

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

Finally, a monument is planned to commemorate the events of the 1956 uprising. What's most fitting is that this is to be erected were once the statue of Stalin stood: Hétszázmillióért épül '56-os emlékmű az egykori Sztálin szobor helyén

It will be ready to mark the 50th anniversary of the uprising on October 23rd, 2006. The events of 1956 saw an extremely brutal example of what their 'liberators' were capable and willing to inflict on Hungarians, probably best told through images of the events 1956.

A good overview of the events is available on the Wikipedia entry for the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

The news also coincides with the upcoming annual celebration of what is known as the Budapest Farewell or 'Budapesti Búcsú', to celebrate the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the city (and Hungary) in 1991. This year the celebrations will be on the coming weekend, the 25th and 26th of June.

I have to ask my friends in Sopron how they will celebrate the Budapest Farewell. Maybe your readers could be interested in my post, PAN-EUROPEAN PICNIC 1989.

Martin,

I'll have to get my old passport out, because I think we were in Sopron at about the same time! It was my first time in Hungary and the journey on to Vienna was packed with people in heavy overcoats with one large bag. And there was an eerie silence for the whole journey.

It was only when we got to Nürnberg and found a week old copy of the New York Times that we read about what we had been part of.

It's probably the most important event in my life and I didn't know what was happening at the time.

It goes without saying that this part of the fall of iron curtain just isn't known about, isn't understood and has yet to receive it's full place in the history books.

Thanks for the link and a more general link is available at Paneuropean Picnic in Hungary.

I've got a specific post to write about this closer to the time. I still have my scrapbooks full of things I collected here and a bottle of Pálinka I have never dared to drink, because the alcohol doesn't smell like it was meant for internal consumption.

I was only in Hungary for a week (Budapest, Kapuvár, Sopron), but it was enough for me to want to return here as soon as I could.

Szia Vandorlo!

If you want to know more about Sopron and other places in this area, please contact me by email (I couldn't find an email address on your blog) and I will direct you to an acquaintance who organizes trips and and travels in Hungary and Austria. I want to go back soon again. It would be nice to attend the wine festival. I tasted lots of good wines in Sopron. I was a bit suspicious about Palinka too at first, but I learned to like some types. We drank Palinka and ate Gyros at the big indoor market in Budapest.

Hi Martin,

Many thanks for your offer. As it happens, because I had enjoyed my time in Sopron, the Hungarian Education Ministry placed me in Western Hungary for 2 years when I first came back to Hungary in 1993 (part of which was teaching redundant Russian teachers).

Over that time I had the good fortune to meet and teach a lot of people from Sopron to Szombathely and even as far in as Keszthely. One of my favourites is still Kőszeg.

Sopron is a great wine region. It's a shame a lot of people don't get to experience much outside of the predictable (if good) Kamocsay Ákos' range, Bikavér or Tokai. Hopefully, they will receive the attention they deserve soon.

I love Pálinka, particularly the home brew kind (házi-pálinka), but the bottle I bought back in 1989 is not made with pure fruit - more like benzine. I wouldn't want to suggest that anyone miss out on the opportunity to enjoy the real thing.
